Kataro is the brand name of wines made by Domaine Avetissyan. It is located in Artsahk.
Kataro makes wine from both estate grown Khndoghni from Togh village in the Hadrut region and Khndoghni grapes from other regions in Artsahk. They also make a white wine and a rosé from grapes grown in Armenia.
Grigor Avetissyan is a winemaker in love with his vineyards and the wine making process. During our visit we tasted Khndoghni wines from various regions of Artsakh, each displaying different characteristics of fruit and acidity, experimental batches of his reserve wines and even a sweet red wine made in the style of a Monastrell Dolce from Spain. Expect to see more vineyard specific wines from Kataro in the future as Grigor further refines his vineyard cultivation and wine-making.
It’s not easy to get to Kataro and if you plan to visit, arrangements should be made in advance. But if your travels to Armenia take you to Artsakh, we recommend a visit to this special winery making some of Armenia’s best wines.
